Wide Gaps And Low Liquidity

Our buyers and sellers differ on a wide range of opinions, but they all agree on one thing, today's prices will probably not exist in a few weeks from now. The gap between offers and bids is getting wider as the beliefs of buyers and sellers all got boosted in the previous week. And even though we have our own speculations about the market direction, we wouldn't want to place any bets in this market. Because the nervousness on the market on both sides of the market has shown the market needs a small kick to either trade up or down. But we do feel a strong reaction from the market is around the corner.

In pre-GDT days business is usually slow, and yesterday was no exception. Buyers and sellers who dare to mention a price seem to build in a lot of room ensuring sellers and buyers are too far apart to come together. Butter bids and offers were roughly € 150,- apart, cheese prices a good € 200,- and on powders the gaps vary between € 50 and € 250.

Looking at the GDT forecast SGX futures would indicate an increase of roughly 5%. We would be very surprised to see the GDT increase by this much. We discussed the potential outcome with a few different partners and the expectations differ between a minus of 2% up to an increase of 2.5%. We would be (non-surprising) on the low side of the expectation. A part from our indication would be based on anecdotal stories that the Soummam tender was closed on very competitive prices compared to EU products. Prices below € 2300,- were mentioned, and those are far from EU indications and SGX futures.
