More Sellers, Fewer Buyers, No Conviction

Yesterday we saw a bit of pressure coming to the market. With more offers on butter and smp we see buyers taking a small step back again, while sellers stepping a bit more forward. But we can sense doubt on both sides of the market, therefor the activity remains low. 

Looking closer at the milk intake numbers in Germany and France we see both countries are reporting roughly 0,7% more milk in the last weeks of December compared to the year before, and with that, the long negative trend in France has been breached and Germany has recovered quicker than most of our partners expected. It seems to confirm the current market view that the milk output is overperforming and therefore a bit more easy to find on the spot market.

Most traders we speak to want to find some confirmation first in the prices for raw milk, creams and SMC before taking any new market views. Producers do seem to be looking for buyers for a bit more extra volume on the commodity side. Butter and SMP or Cheese and SWP at the current market levels give a better return than selling milk in the spot market. It is therefore expected that the commodity market will get a bit looser in the short-term period ahead.

    Our Long View Before Our Long Break

    Last week the market found a bit of stability. After lower trades on cheese, the cheese market traded slowly up, although a real rally remains absent. Butter prices did dip a bit further, although at the start of this week we see some strength on the back end of the curve. And on powder, our bullish feeling just doesn't go away — and now we can find some confirmation in the market as well.

    Summer Shopping or Summer Sale?

    Last week was again a bit of a bearish week for the entire dairy industry. With cream prices under pressure and milk intake still strong, we keep seeing a market that has more supply than demand. Butter prices took another step lower, cheese prices cracked, and the powder market gave back a bit of its gains again.
