We are back from our holiday break and ready to assist again in bringing buyers and sellers closer together in their needs to sell and buy dairy commodities. Looking back at 2023 we think it has been a very volatile year and we expect nothing less from 2024. Before our break, commodities prices were correcting down fast and we were expecting a continuation of that decline. But it seems the market has found the floor quicker than we anticipated and aside from some cheaper Christmas production products it seems the market will start stable to firm in 2024!

Although the first weeks of the new year always start of with mediocre demand, it seemed that the last weeks of the year buyers were anticipating steady to firm demand, even in the first weeks of the new year. Spot demand for butter and cheese remained okay in the last weeks and the availability remains tight. Those buyers hoping to scoop up some cheap end-of-year stock have found themselves with many, while the sellers needing to get rid of products were hard to find. It seems that (once again) too many people believed in the same market patterns, creating a crowded short position that kept prices stable to firm.

However, uncertainty and doubt will continue to dominate the market in the first months of this year as well. With the war in Ukraine and Gaza continuing to create geopolitical tensions, the Red See route being used less, a dry Panama Canal causing logistic issues and central banks fighting inflation there are too many moving parts to make a good guess about how the next months will look like. It does seem that stocks are lower than (we) expected it to be, and there are more buyers who anticipated cheaper products for the beginning of this year (also us). That tells us supply has been worse than expected and demand has been better than expected.

Apart from being happy to be back in the market again, we are also happy to connect again. Feel free to reach out again to discuss your needs, your thoughts or your questions you have for Get Fair Dairy. We are here to connect.
