Last Update of This Year: Preparing for 2024!

It might sound a bit early on the 27th of November, but this is probably our last 2023 update! Writing our daily updates is one of the greatest joys we have at Get Fair Dairy. Informing you about our activities, market vision and the latest trends and news facts is 50% of our daily activity and with over 800 daily readers we know our efforts are appreciated. But with the activity in the market slowing down, and the activity outside of our daily business increasing in the December months, we have decided to postpone our daily updates until the new year! If there are any major updates to be given we will do so, but with recent market developments, it might be a stable/boring few weeks until the new year starts.

Last week was a very quiet day from our side. The uncertainty about the market direction keeps market participants from acting. It seems the supply of milk will decrease compared to the previous year, so sellers are very reluctant to oversell and therefore feel comfortable waiting for higher prices. Their strategy to sell products at the last moment in the previous months has led to increased sales since August and most feel comfortable in selling most volumes for January at the absolute last moment.

However, the concerns from end users about the demand keep them from engaging for new volumes. All of our buyers claim to be fully booked until mid-January or even for the first three months of the year and feel comfortable postponing purchases until after Christmas. They know that contracting volumes in Q1 is by far the easiest when milk supply increases at the same time demand contrasts. This has led to the Mexican standoff we wrote about last week, and it seems it could last for a few weeks more.

December: Planning for the new year

In December the trading activity usually slows down, and we expect it to be the case this year as well when we look at most of our partners. Making budgets, end-of-year drinks, performance reviews and office parties are on top of the priority lists. On top of our priority list is to think about how we can service our partners better. We are open to feedback and would like to hear what you are missing in our updates, what you like and don't like and what products you would like to read about more.

With almost 70.000mt of product brokered by us, we are thankful for the trust so many of our partners have put in us. With Linda den Ruyter added to the team, we hope to be giving a more complete picture of the dairy commodity market in Europe and a little bit outside of the EU as well. We see more and more partners reaching out to us and getting their colleagues on the reader list of this email update. To avoid sending the same mail multiple times, everyone can sign up for free via www.getfairdairy.nl/register.

Looking ahead to 2024 we will be putting more focus on the following activities.

  • Giving weekly reports about our trading data, showing more insights into trends, not only on trend but on volume and specified by origin as well.
  • Return of the podcast, with a weekly frequency we would like to take you on our journey in the dairy market and give some of our partners a moment to share their insights with you guys as well.
  • With cheese being one of the key drivers behind the current market rally, we would like to give you a better and more complete picture of the price action, traded volumes and market drivers in the cheese sector. We know we have a lot of readers who buy and sell cheese. We would like to invite you to share with us your needs and how we could be the best broker to service these needs.
  • Increase liquidity for liquids! With liquids being an early key indicator for trend reversals or trend boosts, we aim to give more data-driven insights about the liquids commodity markets, with cream and smc being the two biggest drivers. Therefore we invite our readers who would be interested in buying and selling liquids to let us know how we can service you best in this market.
